Why Nicotine Should Be Included in the 12 Steps of Recovery from Addiction

Addiction recovery programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Cocaine Anonymous (CA) have helped millions find a path to sobriety. These programs often rely on foundational texts such as the "Big Book" of Alcoholics Anonymous. However, one significant flaw remains largely unaddressed: the acceptance of nicotine use within the recovery framework. This oversight stems from outdated beliefs about smoking that originated in the 1930s, a time when tobacco was wrongly promoted as a health aid. Today, we know smoking causes severe cancers and leads to slow, painful deaths. Nicotine is a dangerous drug that deserves a place in the 12 Steps of recovery alongside alcohol and other substances.
